A Complete Guide to Obtaining a Maryland Medical Marijuana Card in – 2023
Marijuana for medical purposes has been legal in the state of Maryland. Recreational and adult use is illegal. However, there is a limited exemption for possessing small amounts of marijuana as non-patients. The state legislature regulates the medical marijuana program. They overlook the patient’s records, consumption, and sale to prevent misuse. It is one of 38 states in the U.S. that partially recognizes weed.

How to Get an MMJ Card if You’re under 18?
If the patient is a minor or has a disability, they can register with the aid of a caregiver. Primary caregivers are generally a parent or legal guardians of the patients. An additional caregiver is any adult authorized by the parent or guardian of the patient.
To register as a caregiver, you must apply on behalf of the patient. On the portal, start by accessing the Minor Patients tab in the dropdown. The state will require you to meet the age regulations and provide proof such as
- State ID
- Certificate of adoption or birth proof if you are the direct parent or legal guardian
- Photo proof
- Any other document that proves that you are a resident of the state.
Qualifying Medical Conditions
The MMCC deems certain medical conditions eligible to become a registered patient in Maryland. These conditions are pain-inducing and chronic. When applying for a state card, any other health condition which may be approved by a licensed doctor should be approved by the state.

Is Weed Legal in Maryland?
Medical Cannabis has been legal in Maryland since 2015. However, Maryland’s medical marijuana program became operational only in 2017. The Natalie M. LaPrade Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) is the regulatory agency for medical cannabis in Maryland. It maintains and overlooks all the necessary policies, procedures, registries, and laws on medical cannabis.
As of 2022, the Governor of Maryland has put a policy straight into the ballot box for Maryland voters to decide whether the recreational use of marijuana can be legalized or not. After the voting, the bill could pass as law without the signature or veto of the Governor.
MD Medical Cannabis Laws
1. Qualifying Patients – can possess up to 120 grams of cannabis flower (dried) or 36 grams of THC concentrate for 30 days. If the medical practitioner prescribes any more than this amount, the patient must produce the certification proof in case of inquiry.
2. Non-patients – Adults older than 21 can possess 10 grams or less of marijuana in person. Anything more than that is punishable by the law as follows:
- $100 for first-time offenders
- $250 for second-time offenders
- $500 for third or subsequent offenders
3. It is illegal to grow any number of marijuana plants, even for MMJ Card holders.
Where to Buy Maryland Medical Cannabis?
Registered patients or their caregivers can purchase only from certified dispensaries. A simple search of state-approved marijuana dispensaries can show results for cities such as Baltimore, Annapolis, and Westminster. Many pharmacies offer curbside pickup in addition to storefront sales.
Reciprocity
Maryland does not proffer reciprocity to out-of-state patients. The Maryland medical cannabis program is for an eligible patient enlisted with the MMCC and has a written certification to obtain medical cannabis from a state-certified provider. Individuals must be patients in the Maryland program to purchase medical cannabis from a licensed dispensary in the state.
